What is the Town Hall?

The Great Lakes Town Hall was created by Biodiversity Project, an environmental nonprofit communications organization, in 2005. The website is maintained by the Chicago-based organization's staff and volunteers. The website is moderated by Dave Dempsey in the Twin Cities region of Minnesota, Gary Wilson and Rebecca Dill, both in Chicago. The real authors of the Great Lakes Town Hall, however, are its users who share their experiences, thoughts and questions regarding the Great Lakes. Register today to join the discussion!

The Town Hall is funded by our sponsors and your generous donations. Your support is vital to maintaining this dynamic and exciting website. Please consider making a contribution today!

Why a Town Hall?

Residents of the Great Lakes are divided by great physical distance and political differences. Stretching from the remote Northwoods of Minnesota and Western Ontario, through the heavily industrialized and irrigated lands of the eastern Midwest, to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, the Great Lakes drainage basin spans two countries, two provinces and eight states. The Great Lakes Town Hall is designed to bridge those physical distances in a virtual space.

There are organizations on the web and on the ground doing great work to protect the Great Lakes and educating the public on Great Lakes issues. The Town Hall takes the next step, offering analysis and opinions on current issues facing the Lakes and creating a "space" for dialogue, discussion and debate among residents across the wide Great Lakes region.
